What we’ve been up to

What’s Been Happening at Milk St. Studios

There’s been a lot happening around Milk St. Studios lately, and it’s been great seeing the space continue to grow into more than just a place to rehearse.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been experimenting with new events, new ways for members to meet each other, and more opportunities to learn, play, and spend time at the studio.

More Ways to Play

Tuesday Jam Night continues to be one of the staples of the week, giving musicians of all skill levels a chance to jump into a room, meet new people, and play some music.

We’ve also started adding some smaller and more focused jam opportunities. Acoustic nights give members another chance to get together in a more relaxed setting, while our Impromptu Jam series lets us explore different styles like funk, soul, and R&B.

The goal is simple: create more chances to actually play music with other people.

Songwriting, Tone Talk & Learning Together

We’ve also been expanding the educational and social side of the studio.

SongLab with Lindsay has continued to bring songwriters together to develop material, share ideas, and work on their craft.

Tone Talk is another new addition. It’s a casual gathering built around pedals, amps, effects, signal chains, guitar tone, and gear. Each session gives us a chance to dig into something new, try equipment out, and learn from each other without making it feel like a formal class.

We’re continuing to look for ways to make the knowledge already within our community more accessible to everybody.

A Look Behind the Recording Process

We’re also beginning to explore more ways to give members a look behind the curtain of the recording process.

Upcoming sessions will give musicians an opportunity to see how a song comes together piece by piece, from drums and bass to guitars, vocals, and additional instrumentation.

The idea is to create more opportunities for musicians to watch the process, ask questions, and learn more about recording in a real studio environment.

Making More Use of the Lounge

The Lounge has also become an increasingly useful part of the studio.

In addition to classes, workshops, networking events, Record Club, and other community gatherings, it gives larger groups a place to rehearse together when a standard rehearsal room simply isn’t big enough.

Groups of roughly 12 to 20 musicians can comfortably make use of the space, making it a great option for concert bands, jazz groups, funk groups, ensembles with horn sections, and other larger musical arrangements.

With a backline, PA system, mixing board, and flexible room setup, it gives musicians another option for rehearsals that require a little more space.

More Music, More Community

At the end of the day, that’s really what all of this is about.

Milk St. Studios isn’t meant to be somewhere you only visit when you need a rehearsal room. We want it to be a place where musicians can meet each other, learn something new, find people to collaborate with, discover new music, and feel connected to the local music community.

Some ideas will become regular events. Others might happen once and turn into something completely different. That’s part of the fun.

We’re going to keep experimenting, listening to our members, and finding new ways to make the studio useful for musicians throughout the Seacoast.

If you haven’t been by in a while, there’s plenty going on.

Come play, learn something new, and meet some fellow musicians.

We’ll see you at Milk St.
